RISEBA congratulates students on receiving LSFP scholarships

The Latvian Sports Federations Council (LSFP) informs that this year, after the evaluation of 94 athlete applications, 52 student athletes have been awarded a Sports Scholarship for the academic year 2023/2024. Luge athletes Elīna Ieva Vītola and Kendija Aparjode will receive the highest scholarship – EUR 2000, track and field athlete Agate Caune – EUR 1800. The sports scholarship is granted from the state budget to promote dual career opportunities for high-class athletes studying at higher education institutions, combining studies with the development of sports skills.

Scholarship winners represent 20 sports, among them: eight floorball players, seven orienteers, six luge runners, five basketball players, five track and field athletes, four swimmers, two cross-country skiers, two kayakers and one sports dancer each, as well as one athlete each from biathlon, bobsleigh, freestyle wrestling, figure skating, frisbee, hockey, canoe paddling, crossminton, gymnastics, water motorsports and volleyball.

The largest number of scholarship winners study at Riga Technical University – 14, University of Latvia – 12, Turība University – 4, Latvian Academy of Sport Education – 3, Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, Riga Stradiņš University, RISEBA University of Applied Sciences, as well as other universities.

The sports scholarship is granted from the state budget funds in order to promote dual career opportunities for high-class athletes studying at higher education institutions, combining studies with the development of sports skills, popularising student sport and promoting the preparation of athletes for participation in the Latvian national teams in their respective sports. The scholarship is to be used to promote the scholarship holders’ pursuit of higher education and development of sports skills.

LSFP President Einars Fogelis: “This is a time when we not only recognise an athlete’s achievements, but also support them on their journey to higher education. Each of these 52 scholarship recipients is not only a committed athlete, but also a diligent student, and these athletes are role models in pursuing dual careers, thinking about their future beyond sport. The sports scholarship is an investment not only in the development of individual talent, but also in the future of sport and education in Latvia as a whole.”
